Thompson Commercials spoke with Contract Managers Andy Murray and Andy Turner about their fleet decisions, experience with Renault Trucks and Isuzu, and their approach to new technologies including mirrorless vehicles and electrification.
Our decision is based on a number of factors, including fleet recommendations, input from our transport team, and procurement considerations.
We went out to market with a clear specification and selected the vehicles that best met our operational requirements, while also offering a competitive commercial solution.
This is the first time we’ve introduced Renault Trucks on this particular contract, so it represents a trial for us.
We’ve previously operated Isuzu vehicles, particularly within the 7.5-tonne range. While they met the specification at the time, our experience has been mixed, which is why we continue to review our options.
Our experience with Thompsons has been very positive.
John has been extremely supportive throughout the process, particularly when dealing with last-minute challenges. While some issues were outside of his control, he has consistently worked to resolve them, ensuring minimal disruption to our operation.
Where required, cover vehicles have been provided, and overall, we’ve been well supported throughout.
We currently operate a mirrorless Arctic vehicle within the fleet.
So far, we’ve had no negative feedback from drivers, which is encouraging. Early indications suggest a positive experience, although further feedback will develop over time as usage increases.
Electric vehicles are an important part of our future fleet strategy and something we are actively exploring.
As part of this contract, we’ve introduced a small number of electric vehicles to assess how they perform in real-world conditions. A key consideration will be whether they can meet the operational demands of our contracts, particularly in terms of mileage and daily usage.
Yes, we have introduced a small number of electric vehicles as part of this contract.
We also operate electric vehicles in other areas of the business, but this is the first time we are trialling them within this specific operation.
There are two key areas that would support wider adoption of electric vehicles:
While overnight charging works well where facilities are in place, further infrastructure development will be essential to support long-term growth.
With the support of Thompsons, the business successfully introduced a fleet that meets both operational and commercial needs.
Strong communication and the provision of cover vehicles ensured minimal disruption, even during early challenges.
The addition of Renault Trucks and electric vehicles marks a clear step forward—supporting efficiency today while preparing for a more sustainable future.
